Christmas in Padstow

Padstow’s Christmas Lights

Padstow Christmas Lights - Switched on at the Christmas Shopping Event on Saturday 8th December.  See below for more details.

Padstow’s Christmas Shopping Event

Bigger and better than ever, Padstow Late Night Shopping is on Saturday 8th December this year.

The evening gets underway at 5.00pm when the St Minver Silver Band  (sponsored by PATA) will strike up on the Bandstand.

Shoppers arriving by car can take advantage of free parking provided in the Padstow Town Council car park. Padstow shop keepers will have been hard at work producing some stunning festive window displays as part of the annual Window Dressing Competition which is to be judged prior to Late Night Shopping. Please have a good look round and see if you agree with the judges!!

The excellent Christmas Lights will be switched on as part of the evenings festivities. Padstow Rotary Club work tirelessly throughout the year to produce one of the finest displays of Christmas illuminations in Cornwall. The display around the harbour and town centre gets bigger and better each year.

Make your way to the Bandstand in plenty of time to see the children of Padstow Primary School parade to the harbour carrying colourful lanterns they have made themselves at workshops sponsored by Bagend Leatherworks and  Craft Cabin.  The Rev Chris Malkinson  will lead a short ceremony after which the people of Padstow will get their first sight of this years Christmas Lights switched on by a local celebrity at about 6.00pm.

Not to miss out on the excitement, Santa will arrive in town with the help of Padstow Fire Brigade who will transport him to the Institute where he will make himself at home in a colourful grotto. The Padstow branch of the Royal British Legion always produce an excellent grotto for Santa. Children can visit him here throughout the evening. The Legion will also be holding their popular raffle if you’re feeling lucky.

While in the Institute, please take time to admire the art display produced by our local Primary Schools.

Sara Adams of Padstow Studio on Duke Street has spent this last term advising the children on aspects of their art work and has kindly provided the prizes for the competition winners.

Shops should now be open for you to purchase that special gift. The changing nature of shops in town now makes Padstow a great location for your Christmas Shopping. There is a huge range of modern clothes shops, art galleries, jewellers, and leather goods. Specialist food shops, wooden gifts and toys. Fine wines, Christmas novelties and cards, household goods and books. Local crafts and antiques sports and fishing goods. Perfumes, toiletries watches and clocks, the list is endless. Don’t forget, Padstow shopkeepers are very generous with their hospitality on Late Night Shopping!!!

To keep you in the festive mood St Minver Band will roam the streets with seasonal tunes. The Padstow Merrymakers will bring their own special entertainment and a local folk group will get your feet tapping. Padstow Kernow Players will perform Old Time Music Hall numbers.

When you’re feeling peckish there are many food shops selling take away nibbles and Padstow Lions will be hosting their annual barbecue. Amongst local groups running stalls will be the RNLI, Padstow Cubs and the Sea Cadets.

If you have time during the evening, wander over to the Tourist Information Office where Padstow Tourism Association will be launching their 2008 Padstow Guide.

At 7.00pm the Padstow Carollers will be performing some traditional Cornish carols continuing on until 7.30pm. If you are wondering whether we have a traditional Christmas tree this year, wander over to The Drang where you will find the combined efforts of the Rotary Club, Bin Two wines and Dukeswood have come up with just that.

From 7.30pm until 8.30pm the crowds will be further entertained from the balcony of Walkers Restaurant by The Great Western Jazz Company playing music to dance and shop to, sponsored by  The Metropole Hotel. Gather around the harbour for the fabulous Fireworks display at 8.30pm provided by Celebration Fireworks and sponsored again by the Seafood Restaurant with the support of Cornish Horizons Holiday Cottages. This promises to be bigger and, if possible, better than last years excellent display. The harbour will be ablaze with our Christmas Lights providing a colourful backdrop to the spectacular fireworks. The Old Ship Hotel have kindly provided the marshalls again this year and the Padstow Harbour Commissioners have generously allowed us to use their land.

Even though most of the shops will have closed you don’t need to go home early. There is live entertainment in The Old Ship and the Merrymakers will no doubt be living it up in all our pubs.

No one does a good night better than Padstow and as usual, all our organisations have combined together to make it a special one, you are all very welcome to attend. Late Night Shopping is organised by Padstow and District Chamber of Commerce.
